20-year-old Jacksonville firefighter identified in fatal Putnam County ATV crash, sources say

Late on Saturday night, November 18, a tragic collision occurred between a pickup truck and an ATV off Putnam County Road 309. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that both passengers on the ATV were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to sources close to the situation, one of the individuals involved was 20-year-old JFRD firefighter Tanner Gillespie. Action News Jax received this information, and it was confirmed that Gillespie, who started his JFRD career four months ago on July 17, 2023, as a member of Recruit Class 2-23, was one of the victims.

Following his graduation from recruit school, Gillespie was assigned to Engine Company 30. Notably, his father is a retired Lieutenant with the department.

In response to the tragedy, the JFDBF (Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Benevolent Foundation) posted on Facebook, requesting thoughts and prayers for the Gillespie family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

The incident unfolded as an ATV approached the intersection at Browns Fish Camp around 11 p.m., and a pickup truck, traveling in the same direction, failed to complete a right turn, resulting in the collision.
