On February 27th, the Jacksonville Federal Court Bar Association, in collaboration with the D.W. Perkins Bar Association, will host a members luncheon featuring former Jacksonville Sheriff Nat Glover as the guest speaker. Glover will delve into the themes of his book, “Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff in the Deep South,” offering insights into his remarkable journey and experiences.

The luncheon is scheduled to commence at noon in the Jury Assembly Room at the Bryan Simpson U.S. Courthouse, located at 300 N. Hogan St. in Downtown Jacksonville.

Glover’s narrative traces back to his youth in segregated Jacksonville, where he was thrust into the heart of racial turmoil during the infamous “Ax Handle Saturday” on August 27, 1960. Despite facing adversity and witnessing police indifference during that tumultuous period, Glover remained undeterred in his pursuit of a career in law enforcement.

With a career spanning over 37 years, Glover rose through the ranks, ultimately becoming the first Black sheriff in Jacksonville’s history when he was elected in 1995. His historic achievement also marked him as the first elected Black sheriff in Florida since the Reconstruction Era, solidifying his place as a trailblazer in law enforcement history.
