Jacksonville mother waits for answers after JHA application for housing voucher accepted 8 months ago

The Jacksonville Housing Authority (JHA) is currently under investigation by the city, prompting more community members to express concerns about the extended wait for assistance. The Housing Voucher program, designed to provide rental support to families in need, currently boasts an average waiting period of two years. However, even after successfully navigating the waiting list and gaining acceptance into the program, some individuals are encountering difficulties in obtaining information from JHA staff.

A woman, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her frustration with News4JAX, emphasizing the challenges faced by single mothers seeking assistance. Despite being approved for a voucher almost three years after applying in 2020, she expressed her ongoing struggle with limited communication from JHA officials. With her living conditions becoming increasingly challenging for her family of four, the voucher approval has yet to translate into tangible assistance. The lack of updates has left her in limbo, waiting for the crucial call signaling that it’s time to move.

JHA officials disclosed that a staggering 98,000 individuals are currently on the waiting list for housing assistance in Jacksonville. City authorities acknowledged a substantial shortage of affordable housing, estimating a deficit of 35,000 units. Other community members echoed similar sentiments, citing prolonged waiting times and a notable absence of communication from JHA.

In response to the growing concerns, News4JAX sought answers at a news conference attended by Mayor Donna Deegan and other city officials. While signing legislation to address homelessness, Mayor Deegan clarified that the Housing Authority was not directly involved in the presented bill. Emphasizing the shared goal of expediting affordable housing solutions, she acknowledged the need to fast track available resources. Despite reassurances from the Housing Authority CEO earlier in the week, stating that customers were not upset, community members continue to grapple with the challenges of extended waits and insufficient communication, adding urgency to the ongoing investigation into JHA’s operations.
