‘She was an icon’: Betty Holzendorf, former Florida lawmaker from Jacksonville, dies at 84

Betty Holzendorf, a former Florida lawmaker from Jacksonville and a prominent figure in local politics, passed away at the age of 84, as announced by the Duval Democrats on Thursday. Holzendorf was remembered as a legendary leader and dedicated Democrat, known for her advocacy in various areas including education, affordable housing, healthcare, and environmental issues such as beach re-nourishment.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Holzendorf pursued her education at institutions including Edward Waters College, Atlanta University, and the University of North Florida, where she obtained degrees in Biochemistry and Education Administration.

Her impact extended beyond politics, with her legacy also celebrated at the University of North Florida, where she was hailed as an icon for her community dedication. Former Senator Audrey Gibson shared memories of Holzendorf, highlighting her straightforwardness and commitment to community service.

Holzendorf’s political career included serving as an administrative aide to Jacksonville Mayor Jake Godbold in the 1960s, followed by terms in the Florida House from 1988 to 1992 and in the Florida Senate from 1992 to 2002. She also ran for Jacksonville Mayor in 2003.

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan paid tribute to Holzendorf, acknowledging her trailblazing career and unwavering dedication to public service. Holzendorf was married to King Holzendorf, a former Jacksonville councilman, and leaves behind four children and four grandchildren.
